A History of Mottahedeh's Tobacco Leaf
The Tobacco Leaf pattern was developed in China around 1780. It was produced for export only, mostly for the Portuguese and Brazilian markets. Mottahedeh ’s Tobacco Leaf reproduction was designed with an eye towards ease of use. Since the original tobacco leaf porcelain had gold on it, it was easily damaged by washing. When the pattern was reproduced by Mrs. Mottahedeh, she developed a production method that made the gold stable. She claimed that the Tobacco Leaf pattern with gold that won’t come off during washing was one of her contributions to the Women’s Movement. We think anyone can appreciate that advance!
